After last week’s Top Chef: Las Vegas camping excursion, the chef’s are back minus Mattin, and ready to face their next high stakes challenge. Everyone is disappointed that Robin is still hanging on by the skin of her teeth, and believes that she should have gone home last week, not Mattin.
Quickfire Challenge
Michelle Bernstein is the guest judge on this week’s episode. Padme quickly issues the quickfire challenge, which requires the chefs to do a duo of treats representing the balance between angel and devil, which is one of the representations of Vegas itself. You want to behave, but sometimes you just can’t do it.
They are given an hour to put together a devil and angel dish. The least favorites were Ash, Bryan and Laurine. Michelle’s favorites were Michael, Eli and Robin. Everyone’s perturbed that Robin was a favorite, and they are all disgusted when Robin is the winner of the quickfire challenge. She now has immunity as the chefs move into the elimination challenge.
Elimination Challenge
Penn and Teller arrive for the elimination challenge and they do a quick magic trick to kick things off. They need to deconstruct a classic dish, meaning they need to take apart the dish and allow the diner to put the dish back together on the plate. They find out that they will be serving Toby Young, Tom Colicchio, Penn & Teller and Michelle Bernstein. Everyone is overwhelmed by the fact that Toby is returning, but for the most part they all feel confident they can do what needs to be done to impress the judges. The chefs hit Whole Foods and then the kitchen, where they begin putting together their deconstructed dishes. Eli’s pressure cooker explodes on him and Bryan, and Robin is still wearing on everyone’s nerves.
They hit the kitchen and begin taking out their dishes to the judges in pairs. It seems as each pair goes out, that each pair has one dish that fails to impress the judges except for Ashley and Kevin, who both win the table’s favor with their dishes. After Robin serves the final dish, the judges go to table for discussion, joined by Toby Young.
Judges’ Table
They call back Kevin, Michael, Ashley and Jennifer first, the four being the judges’ favorites. The chef who wins the deconstruction challenge is Kevin. He wins a set of Calphalon Unison nonstick cookware. The judges ask to see Laurine, Ron and Ash. Ash disappointed with his lack of potatoes and inconsistency with the meat cooking consistency. Laurine knows her fish was overcooked and she was outside her comfort zone. Ron has never deconstructed and that is his downfall. The judges discuss and debate, and in the end it’s Ron who is sent home.
Next week the judges crank up the heat and present the cheftestants with their greatest challenge yet.
