The Real World, a staple in the lives of most MTV generation teens, started in 1992 and continues to be the longest running program in MTV history. But what happened to some of those cast members we all loved? How about the ones we loved to hate?
Eric Nies of The Real World: New York, got his start on the program and used The Real World as a springboard into the reality television industry. While working on the show, Eric was also doing photo shoots as a male model, often walking around the New York pad shirtless to show off his physique. After The Real World, he went on to host The Grind, an MTV show where the audience came out and showed off dance moves. After a series of failed aerobics products and videos, he ended up on Confessions of a Teen Idol, a VH1 show that attempts to revitalize former teen idols’ careers.
His castmate, Kevin Powell, achieved success in the realms of poetry, writing, and politics. To this date, Kevin has published 8 books and written for publications such as Esquire and Newsweek. He is a successful political activist, appearing at hundreds of colleges, universities, community centers, and corporate settings, including the United Nations. He has run for congress twice in New York’s 10th congressional district and intends to run again in 2010.
The Real World: London spawned a brilliant actress, Jacinda Barrett. Jacinda was born in Australia where she became a model at 17. She became a castmate on The Real World in 1995, after which she went on to the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. She landed her first role in 1997 in the little known Campfire Tales, but many may know her as Rebecca from Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.
Irene McGee was known for being on The Real World: Seattle. She left partway through the season claiming it had to do with a relapse of her lyme disease, although later speculation indicates it may have to do with a clash on ethics. Because of her experiences with the show, Irene became an activist for media ethics. She now head up the podcast No One’s Listening, where she has interviewed such personalities as Noam Chomsky and Lawrence Lessig.
Many Real World castmates continue on as public speakers, lecturing to colleges and high schools as motivational speakers.
