You want Reality TV? The Ultimate Fighter is about as real as it gets when it comes to contact sports. It’s more gruesome than boxing and still more entertaining than wrestling. The Ultimate Fighter kicked off its season premier on September 16, 2009, on Spike TV and if the first episode is a shadow of things to come, this is going to be one bloody season of mixed martial arts competition.
This season two of the sport;s top competitors, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans return to the show as coaches. From the start these to competitors were going at each other in verbal jabs worthy of their competitive nature.
The two coaches picked their teams just like it’s done in a sandlot pickup game of basketball.
They took turns choosing one teammate at a time, supposedly with the worst fighters going last. There was a funny moment when Rampage jokingly chose the camera man instead of the last fighter to be picked. A good side joke that the fighter smiled about and took on the chin well.
While Rashad Evans, the lighter, quicker of the too chose his team for their quickness and ground skills Rampage, the noticeably bigger of the two was all about size and power. His team was picked based almost solely on those physical attributes. The first one out of the box to be picked by Rampage was a surprise new comer to The Ultimate Fighter arena, Kimbo Slice.
Kimbo Slice certainly is not a newcomer to the world of high profile fighting, but mixed martial arts is an altogether different style of fighting compared to Kimbo’s back alley brawling style. Perhaps because of his popularity and lack of competition where he once fought it seems that Kimbo is a marked man, with everyone wanting the first shot at him.
The first fight of the night pitted the smallest competitor from Rashad Evans team against a towering contender from Team Rampage. This guy came into the fight with at least a 4 inch reach advantage and about a 30 to 40lb weight advantage. In the end, size really didn’t matter as the bigger fighter got pummeled by his smaller, quicker opponent.
It wasn’t pretty, in fact it was a bloody mess, but just the type of fight we’ve come to expect from The Ultimate Fighter. If you want to see a good fight then The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV is where you will find one.
