This week’s Jon & Kate Plus 8 episode begins with Kate Gosselin sitting in her interview chair disclosing to viewers how overwhelming her life has become since she and Jon split a few months back. The new single mother, determined to keep some kind of normalcy in place for her eight children, is attempting to do things she has never done before, things that Jon always took care of in the past. On this episode, Kate tries her hand at the backyard barbecue. Never having grilled before, she proudly presents her creation of barbecued chicken and noodles to her awaiting brood, only to soon find out some of the chicken isn’t completely done. She laughs it off and states that she is happy no one came down with a bout of salmonella.
After dinner, Kate attempts to entertain her two eight-year-olds, as well as her five-year-old sextuplets, with a backyard movie night.
Kate and her eight children scatter about in their sleeping bags and enjoy popcorn and a movie on the lawn. After the movie is over, Kate gathers the kids, some of them asleep, and turns in for the night. Later in the episode, Kate is shown rolling her suitcase to her car as she prepares for her separation from the kids. Overcome with emotion, she talks about her love for her children and how hard it is for her to leave them in order for Jon to have his allotted visitation.
Jon soon arrives at the house and attempts to entertain the kids by teaching them how to fish. He and seven of the kids, the eighth one on a shopping trip with grandma, parade through a muddy cow pasture and through the woods in order to reach the neighbor’s creek. After casting and reeling for awhile to no avail, the kids lose interest in the sport and start begging to go home. Jon eventually gives in and the group makes their way back through the muddy field that leads to home. Jon redeems himself, after the failed attempt at fishing, by letting the kids make their own pizzas for dinner. The kids seem to enjoy the pizza making idea much better than the fishing, and they enjoy eating them as well.
The following day, Jon and the kids visit a local pond, where they once again try their hand at the sport of fishing. This time, their attempts pay off as each of them catch one fish after another, ending this fishing trip on a positive note. Jon will soon return to New York, and Kate will return home. This routine will play itself over and over again, as the two parents no longer function as a married couple, but rather, care for their children as separate individuals living separate lives.
