America’s Most Wanted is the longest running show in FOX television’s history, first airing on February 7, 1988, making it tied for 8th as the longest running show in all of prime time network history.
The reality style show is oriented around helping law enforcement agents in the apprehension of fugitives from all parts of the country. On May 2nd, 2008, it was announced that the program had aided in the capture of 1,000 fugitives. By August 22nd, 2009, that number had grown to 1,087 people being arrested with help of America’s Most Wanted.
Criminals of a types and degrees have been profiled on the show. White collar crime, murder, rape, gang violence and even terrorism suspects have been profiled.
Many of these fugitives were found on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List. The gritty program tackles every type of fugitive imaginable and this is a likely reason it has maintained a high television viewership.
The show was temporarily canceled for a month and a half in the fall of 1996, but due to the overwhelming protests from the public as well as law enforcement agents and government officials it encouraged FOX television heads to bring the show back. The protest list included the governors of 37 states and coupling the public negativity with the low ratings for the shows replacing America’s Most Wanted , it’s easy to see why FOX decided to bring the popular show back.
Host by John Walsh this Saturday, September 12, 2009, the American TV classic returns for another season of profiling, lead chasing and the capture of some of America’s worst criminals. Don’t miss the season premier on FOX.
