After a very long wait, the much anticipated Glee is back with episode two. To briefly rehash the series to date, Glee club is comprised of Gleeks. I am guessing that is a combination of glee and geeks, because that aptly names the motley crew of singers, who are as follows:
- Rachel (Lea Michele) is a MySpace performer, who longs for real stardom.
- Mercedes (Amber Riley) is the feisty larger-than-life diva, who hates taking a back seat to anyone. In tonight’s episode, she reveals her pipes while singing her rendition of Kanye West’s “Golddigger”.
- Tormented-by-everyone Artie (Kevin McHale), is confined to a wheelchair but plays a mean guitar.
- Kurt (Chris Colfer) never has a hair out of place, and sure can hold the high notes, forever.
- Shy awkward Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), loses her stutter when she sings.
- Jock and reluctant singer Finn (Cory Monteith) has a cheerleader girlfriend, but may also have feelings for Rachel.
“Showmance” begins with the cheerleading coach, Sue Sylvester, threatening the Gleek’s fearless leader, Will Shuester, with the demise of the club.
She makes sure to let Will know that unless he can recruit six more singers, Glee club won’t qualify for regionals and the club’s funding will be cut.
In order to gain members, Will tries to persuade the Gleeks to perform the disco song, “Le Freak,” before the student body, which they are well aware, would destroy them socially, as well as kill any possible recruitment efforts. So they secretly practice a sexually explicit number, that they know will get the attention of their classmates. And so they do, as every hormonal high schooler falls under the spell of the gyrating dance moves, as the Gleeks sing “Push It,” by Salt-n-Pepa.
Popular cheerleader Quinn grows fearful that her boyfriend Finn may be growing close to Rachel, so she decides to join Glee club to keep an eye on him. She is one smart girl, because his hormones are raging. One of the funniest parts of the episode has Finn recounting what he needs to envision when his sexual feelings get out of control, and I’ll just leave it at that. Oh, and did I mention that he and Rachel kiss?
Viewers are left wondering if Rachel will be able to handle the fact that not only is Quinn her competition for Finn’s affections, but she has also walked away with the lead vocalist spot. Stay tuned.
