Josh_GatesJosh Gates and the crew of Destination Truth are back on Syfy for season three, and you can guarantee from previous episodes that not only will their travels be dangerously amusing, but they will also inspire the daring traveler to wish they were right there alongside the team.

The first half of episode one finds Gates and crew heading off to Romania to explore the Hoia Bacin Forest, rumored by local residents to contain a circle where nothing grows because it is haunted by strange beings.  After consulting with a local expert and interviewing cautious villagers who bid Gates not to go into the forest at all, the Destination Truth gang set out.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

In the history of the series, the Destination Truth crew have found themselves on some pretty questionable planes, and the plane in Romania is no different.

In mid-flight the roof actually tears off, forcing the crew to find an alternative method of transportation: four wheelers. After a few snags in travel, they finally make it to the Hoia Bacin Forest just as the sun is beginning to set. They set up base camp, and set out to explore, immediately glimpsing their first light in the woods. While chasing it down, crew member Rex trips and falls, and they lose the light. This leads them to the discovery of the infamous circle where nothing grows. After taking soil samples, they see a second light in the trees, but again it disappears during pursuit.

Josh does an isolation session in the circle and starts EVP work. During his stay in the circle he feels like someone is watching him, and the base camp camera crew see something over his left shoulder. Tthe FLIR camera picks up nothing. During Evan’s turn in the circle, he hears voices.  Suddenly, the camera crew back at base camp realizes Evan has disappeared from view, and they rush out to find out what happened. They find Evan laid out in the circle, shivering and in shock. He’s covered in scratches and claims that it felt like the wind rushed at him. While they are seeing to Evan’s scratches, Rex gets sick behind them, and they decide to wrap up the investigation.

Back in the states they have the soil samples analyzed, but discover there is no difference between the soil inside the circle and the soil outside that would prohibit vegetation from growing. Josh takes the EVP and video evidence to meet with Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of Ghost Hunters fame. While analyzing the EVPs, they hear female moaning and giggling. Grant and Jason discount the photographic evidence, but are surprised when they see the footage of what happened to Evan. The camera caught Evan being pulled from his chair, and that has everyone scratching their beards.

In the second half of episode one, Josh and crew head south into the Yucatan Peninsula to search for the elusive Alux. The creature is said to be a small, furry humanoid with fierce canine teeth that hides within the ruins and emits a high-pitched shrieking sound when cornered. Superstitious locals build mock houses in the ruins to try and placate the monster, who according to a local couple kidnapped their son.

The crew venture into the jungle to investigate and meet with a shaman who can put them in contact with the Alux. Before meeting with the Shaman, they discover a flooded cave where Josh discovers thousand year old human remains. He leaves them undisturbed, and they move on in search of the shaman.  The shaman sets up ritual and begins the ceremony to contact the Alux. He concocts a drink everyone must partake in, and though skeptical, the crew obliges.

They set up base came and begin investigating, but their investigations are somewhat inhibited by the dozens of poisonous spiders along the way, and eventually a large pit viper snake. Finally they come upon a large cave and begin exploring. Josh finds bones, but cannot be sure what they might belong to. They tag them as evidence, and head back to the States to find out what they’ve got.

After having the bones examined, they find that they most likely belong to a goat and a chicken, and though this is discouraging, Josh ends the episode on a positive note, reflecting on the power of superstition.

All I have to say is if the rest of the season is even half as exciting as episode one, we’re in for a real adventure this fall!
