Since the inception of reality television, there have been countless programs that follow and detail the lives and attributes of some of America’s favorite personalities. During the growth of this new phenomenon, a new type of reality concept has emerged; celebrities doing things that endear them to us. One of the most endearing celebrity reality shows is “Dancing With The Stars.” This is a show that takes well known personalities, partners them with professional ballroom dancers, and has them competing against each other to determine who the best dancer is.
In the process of watching this particular show, America has not only been swept up in the drama of weekly ‘dance-offs’, but has also begun to take a new interest in ballroom dancing for fun and fitness.
If you want to learn how to dance like the stars, there are a few things that you can do in order to be successful.
1) Learn A Few Dances – Some of the more famous dances featured every season are the Mambo, the Cha Cha, the Merengue, and others. You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars looking for dance lessons. Thanks to the power of the internet, you can learn these famous dances in the comfort of your own living room, using your computer as your instructor.
2) Find A Great Partner – Once you have learned a few dances and begun to focus a lot of time on one or two, you will need to find a partner. This step is mentioned second, but should be a top priority. A great partner can help you break through the learning curve quickly, as well as challenge you to push yourself harder than you would on your own. It may even be that your partner could be a dance instructor.
3) Find A Great Outfit – So, you’ve got your partner and you’ve got your dance down to an art form. The next thing you will need is to find a great dancing outfit. This is a non-specific gender point; both men and women need to be wearing the proper clothing if they are going to really sizzle up the dance floor. You may choose to go all out and spend some big money on this, or you may be the homegrown type who designs and creates his/her own. It really is up to you, since you will ultimately be the one wearing your outfit.
4) Find A Place To Show Off Your Moves – Now, all you need is a place to strut your stuff. If you look online or in your local Yellow Pages, you will notice that there are several opportunities to ballroom dance every week in your area. Also, your city may have local events featuring dances. And, for the more competitive types, there is always the option of following the ‘Arts and Leisure’ section of your regional or state newspapers, looking for bigger dance opportunities.
You may not be a celebrity, but you can dance like them!

Re: #2 "Find A Great Partner" I can't speak for ALL the Ballroom styles and dances out there, but my wife and I teach Swing dancing which, above all, emphasizes the "social" elements of dancing: all the men are encouraged to dance with ALL the women, and vice versa. Partner dancing (leading and following) really is a new way of communicating – one that club music and dancing have lost. It's like learning a new language, where two strangers can interact with each other non-verbally. Once you learn the common "language", you can go out and have entire dance "conversations" with ANYBODY who knows the same basic steps. So even if you don't have (or aren't even looking for) One Dedicated Partner – on the dance floor or off – don't let that stop you from learning how to dance; it's a talent that will serve you well for years to come.
