CSI is a popular program wherever it takes place. Whether in Miami, NY or any locale where it is filmed. This is because it depicts real life careers in law enforcement. Police and law enforcement programs have been popular for years because most people are excited about the field. Many years back series like Dragnet with Jack Webb and the popular show Hill Street Blues were highly watched programs. We all like to read articles online and in the newspapers describing heinous acts of criminals and heroic acts by people in law enforcement.
You can be a part of all this if you obtain a criminology degree. Many public and private schools offer such programs. They need not be too expensive for there are loans and scholarships to be had.
Upon completing your degree you too will be part of the exciting field of criminal justice because you will have been well-trained.
Degrees can be obtained at all levels. There are mainly Associate and Bachelor degrees, but later a Masters and a degree on the Doctoral level can also be obtained. The courses cover the causes of crime and the criminal mind. This deals mainly with the psychological aspects of criminal justice. One must have a criminal mind to begin with but such things as poverty are contributing factors. All this will be studied.
Police science and law enforcement must follow set rules, like the army’s Rules of Engagement. The program emphasizes the best policies and practices to be carried out by officers in the pursuit of justice. Not to use excessive force and how to restrain a perpetrator is analyzed in some of these courses.
Computer related crime, or if you would prefer to call it white-collar crime is analyzed in the syllabus. It is a non-violent type of crime but certainly not without its victims. Bernard Madoff comes to mind in the realm of white-collar crime.
The entire judicial system which encompasses different layers of the court structure is studied. How to conduct an investigation is part of your studies along with forensics. Now we are touching upon what we see on the program CSI. An analysis is always being conducted quite carefully at the crime scene on CSI. Blood and hair being gathered. That is the forensics part.
Juvenile crime must be mentioned as an aspect of the curriculum along with corporate security, a growing field. Shoplifting is a very small part of corporate security. Hacking into the corporation’s computer system and industrial espionage are large segments of the study of corporate security. Finally, we should not forget the many opportunities that go under the heading of Homeland Security. Since 2001 this is a fast growing field.
Enjoying CSI on television is not sufficient to enhance your career. Get your degree in criminology and be part of the scene instead of being a passive bystander.

I'm already going to school for this because I want to be a Crime Scene Analysts, and I watch all of the shows that has to do with investigating and gathering the evidence. I will finish in 3yrs. and then I want to get a job in this because I find it so interesting. But it would be neat if there was a way we could get hands on training because I go to school online. I live in Tyler, Texas. Thanks, Amanda
