Team building in the office setting is essential for office morale. In the world of the in office work place employees often spend more time with their co-workers than with family or friends. The work day can either be a series of tedious navigations around co-workers or fulfilling, productive time for each employee. To forge a cohesive employee group and reduce friction, there are a multitude of team building maneuvers good managers use. These team building exercises can take your business to the next level of office production.

The occasions for team building are numerous. Introduction new employees, merging work groups, changing the corporate structure of the organization, and simply to break out of a routine that seems to be hindering performance are all reasons for team building activities.

There are activities that are easily incorporated into the normal work day along with activities that will take employees outside the realm of their normal duties. Finding opportunities to use both types will improve office morale.

In the office finding ways to improve communication and foster interdependence of co-workers will enhance each person’s knowledge of the company. Assign in office tasks where employees must work together for completion. If there are tasks preformed by only one or two people, try to insure that cross training occurs. This will not only improve education and understanding of the various skills sets needed for the office to work smoothly, it will ensure the job can be preformed if the person assigned is absent. Also, good managers will schedule time for group activities outside the office. Find an activity that will be comfortable for everyone. Many times corporations will pay for team building activities at camps or conference centers. There are plenty of no cost or low-cost alternatives that provide community service. Sponsoring a team for a charity event, especially one where the activity is walking, can encompass everyone. If there are employees that cannot or do not want to walk they can participate as support staff. Highlight the importance of complete participation for the success of the endeavor.

The corporate world and the microcosm of the office setting can become divisive as employees work toward individual self improvement within their profession and within the office environment. This behavior hinders the productivity of the group. Such individualism can also be deleterious to office morale. Savvy managers seek to improve office morale through team building exercises both within the office work structure and in outside activities.
