If you enjoy television and watch reality shows, soaps, drama mini-series, and anything that involves couples and dating, you can get quite a bit of advice for your own dating life. Some of it is direct from shows like “What Not to Wear,” and some is indirect, like avoiding the mistakes unhappy TV couples might have made. Here is a list of five top dating tips from television that will make your dates more frequent, more enjoyable and may lead to the “one.”
1. Look fantastic! Shows that deal with fashion, make-up, and style are fabulous sources of inspiration for how you look. Both men and women can take a lesson from those shows and figure out what look makes them feel comfortable, confident, and sexy.
Dare to try something different. Throw out your old conventions. Try a pair of heels or an art deco tie. Be bold, but find your own style, one that makes you shine from the inside out.
2. Know something! Ever been bored by a date that seemed to know nothing about current events, even the latest hot movie or television show? It doesn’t take an Einstein to keep up with at least a little bit of local news, politics or great new books, movies and concerts. Read, watch, listen, and remember a few interesting anecdotes or trivia facts and you’ll be as entertaining on a date as a great show is!
3. Picky is okay! Soap operas and mini-series dramas are replete with men and women who undervalue themselves and end up dating losers. Don’t date at all if you can’t find someone worthy of your sharp, vivacious or ruggedly burly self. You know from the tube that another person will be waiting in the wings; just be patient and selective.
4. Be a little adventurous with food and wine! No, you are not going to date Emeril or Rachel Ray, but most dates involve restaurants and you want to show you appreciate something more than a burger. Go along with a date’s suggestion that you try the foie gras – it won’t kill you and you might like it. Don’t be too shy to ask the waiter about a good wine choice. Find a little, out-of-the-way local restaurant that uses only raw foods or one that specializes in fusion cuisine. If you watch a few food shows, you’ll get some ideas for adventurous eating.
5. Do not let dates destroy friendships. A good clue to a lousy date is someone who comes between you and your trusted friends. You can tell from Grey’s Anatomy — and from the Sopranos for that matter — that deep friendships can be life-long and a casual date who disses your friends or doesn’t enjoy them is someone to ditch. Dating should be fun and fun includes welcoming new people into your circle without destroying it.
Next time you watch TV, think about what dating tips you can garner from the comedies, trials and tribulations of your favorite shows.
