“Chelsea Lately” began as a successor to the mini-series “The Chelsea Handler Show.” Hosted by Chelsea Handler, the late-night talk show aired on the E! network in June of 2007. Handler is only the second woman in television history to host a late-night program, with Joan Rivers being the first. Many wondered if the show would succeed with a female host in a male dominated medium. It was soon found out that her sarcastic and self-deprecating sense of humor put her at par with the other male counter parts. This is proven in the ratings where “Chelsea Lately” averages over half a million viewers nightly, which is more than the average for any late night cable program.

Chelsea Handler is the youngest of six children.

She was raised Jewish by her Mormon mother and Jewish father. Handler got her start as a stand-up comedienne. She gained popularity quickly and she began touring across the United States. She soon found her way onto television as a regular on the Oxygen network’s candid-camera style show “Girls Behaving Badly.” She made appearances on other shows too such as “Weekends at the D.L.,” “The Bernie Mac Show” and “The Practice.” Besides hosting” Chelsea Lately,” Handler is also a regular commentator on E! and “Scarborough Country”, as well as a regular correspondent on “The Tonight Show” with David Letterman. Handler herself has been a guest on other talk shows as well, such as the View where she even cohosted twice. She is also a published author with two of her books on the best sellers list.

Handler’s hit show “Chelsea Lately,” runs Monday to Friday at 11pm. Handler starts the show with a monologue showcasing her brand of sarcastic wit. The show mainly consists of a panel of three guests for a “round-table” discussion on pop culture, celebrity gossip, hollywood rumors, and other opinions of the day. Handler’s assistant, Chuy Bravo, usually joins the table to give his two-cents on the topics. He oftentimes interviews the studio audience and participates in Handler’s video segments. Her guests range from B-listers to E! celebrities trying to hawk their latest reality show. Handler claims to enjoy having less than famous guests, stating that the more pathetic her guests are the funnier her show is. Some of her regulars include Heather McDonald, John Caparulo, Jen Kirkman, Loni Love, Jason Kennedy, Giuliana Rancic, Arden Myrin, Natasha Leggero, Whitney Cummings, Conor Knighton, Guy Branum, Jo Koy, and Ross Mathews. Occasionally she does have A-list celebrity guests on her show that she’ll conduct short interviews with. While she rarely has musical guests, she has had some in-studio performances.
